? ACTIVITY 1 ?

Identifying and Working with Chemical Hazards

For this activity in recognizing chemical hazards and understanding how to work safely with them, students will need a copy of the Consumer Product Symbols Handout.

  • Bring to class empty consumer containers that have warning labels (e.g. a container of white-out, nail polish remover, furniture polish spray, etc. would be appropriate). Filled containers are not recommended due to the risk of horseplay.
  • Ask students if there is a symbol (picture) on the label and ask what it means (refer to chart). How are students able to use this product more safely if they recognize its hazard?
  • Ask students to read any handling or storage procedures listed on the label. Do these procedures make sense considering the listed hazards of the product?
